Apple Thunderbolt Camera

Use the built-in camera on Mac. Many Mac computers and displays have a built-in iSight, FaceTime, or FaceTime HD camera located near the top edge of the screen. The camera automatically turns on when you open an app that can take pictures, record videos, or make video calls. You can decide which apps are allowed to use the camera on your Mac.

1. I use google hangouts for multiple-people video calls, but it never detects the camera in the Thunderbolt display. It keeps using the camera on my MacBook Pro. Is there any way to change the camer.

3. Select the checkbox next to an app to allow it to access your camera. Deselect the checkbox to turn off access for that app. If you turn off access for an app, you're asked to turn it on again the next time that app tries to use your camera.
4. The Apple Thunderbolt Display used Thunderbolt 2 to connect to a Mac and deliver via the monitor FireWire 800, ethernet, USB, a camera, mic, and speakers. It also had a MagSafe power connector.

I'm connecting a new MacBook Pro 15' (Late 2016) to an Apple Thunderbolt Display using the Apple USB-C to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. 90% of the times, only video works. Ethernet, camera, audio don't work (i.e., no USB). They don't appear listed in Sound preferences or Network preferences, etc. It looks like 99% of the time something goes wrong and the protocol is not negotiated correctly, so only video is available.

I've been suggested by Apple support to delete the 'Thunderbolt Display' entry in the Color section of the video preferences and reboot. I tried that a few times, but the problem persists. I even tried resetting the SMC after deleting the entry. No chance. Ethernet, camera, etc. work in say, one reboot on 10—even less.

Dear Apple guys, any idea? I'm connecting a 4000$ MacBook to an expensive monitor using a 60$ adapter, and it doesn't work. Not what I expect from products in this price range.

Thunderbolt 3

Use Thunderbolt 3 with displays and other devices that connect using either a Thunderbolt 3 cable or USB-C cable. You can also connect a USB-C power adapter and cable to charge your notebook computer. If you have a device that doesn't connect to this port, you might be able to use an adapter to connect it.

These Mac models have Thunderbolt 3 ports:

• MacBook Pro introduced in 2016 or later
• MacBook Air introduced in 2018 or later
• iMac introduced in 2017 or later
• iMac Pro (all models)
• Mac mini introduced in 2018
• Mac Pro introduced in 2019
  

If your Mac notebook or desktop computer has more than one port like this, each port supports ThunderBolt 3 and USB-C.

USB-C

Use USB-C with displays and other devices that connect using a USB-C cable. You can also connect a USB-C power adapter and cable to charge your notebook computer. If you have a device that doesn't connect to this port, you might be able to use an adapter to connect it.

MacBook models introduced in 2015 or later have a single USB-C port. This port doesn't support Thunderbolt devices.

Quality video editing software.

If your Mac has only one port like this, it's a MacBook that supports USB-C but not Thunderbolt.

Thunderbolt

Use Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 with displays and other devices that connect using a Thunderbolt cable.

These Mac models have Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 ports: Open source movie making software for windows.

Thunderbolt and Thunderbolt 2 are not the same as Mini DisplayPort . They have the same shape, but use different symbols on the cable and port. However, this port does support Mini DisplayPort for video output, so you can use a Mini DisplayPort cable to connect a Mini DisplayPort display.

Use Mini DisplayPort with displays that connect using a Mini DisplayPort cable.

These Mac models have Mini DisplayPort:

• MacBook Pro introduced in late 2008 through 2010
• MacBook Air introduced in late 2008 through 2010
• Mac mini introduced in 2009 and 2010
• iMac introduced in 2009 and 2010
• Mac Pro introduced in 2009 through 2012

USB-A

Use USB-A with devices that connect using a USB cable. USB ports are sometimes known by the USB specification of the port, such as USB 2 or USB 3.

HDMI

Use HDMI with displays and TVs that connect using an HDMI cable.

Ethernet

Use Ethernet with networks and devices that connect using an Ethernet (RJ45) cable.

FireWire

Use FireWire with devices that connect using a FireWire 400 or FireWire 800 cable.

SD card

Use the SD card slot with SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, and UHS-II media cards, such as those used by digital cameras.

Audio

Video software for pc. Use Audio-Out — or — with headphones, speakers, and other audio-output devices that connect using an audio cable that has a 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) audio jack.

Use Audio-In with a microphone or other audio-input device that connects using an audio cable that has a 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) audio jack.

Power

Thunderbolt 3

If you're using an Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable or other Thunderbolt 3 cable with your display or other device, it will connect to your Mac without an adapter.

The Apple Pro Display XDR and LG UltraFine 5K Display use Thunderbolt 3.

USB-C

If you're using a mophie USB-C Cable with USB-C Connector or other USB-C cable with your device, it will connect to your Mac or iPad Pro without an adapter.

The LG UltraFine 4K Display uses USB-C.

USB-A

If you're using a USB-A cable with your device, use the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter, the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, the Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter, or another USB-C to USB-A adapter to connect your device to your Mac or iPad Pro.

To charge an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a Thunderbolt 3 or USB-C port without one of these adapters, you can use the Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable instead.

Ethernet

If you're using an Ethernet cable with your device, use a third-party USB-C to Ethernet adapter, such as the Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter.

Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2

If you're using a Thunderbolt or Thunderbolt 2 cable with a Thunderbolt display or other device, use the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter.

This is the correct adapter for the Apple Thunderbolt Display.

Mini DisplayPort

If you're using a Mini DisplayPort cable with a Mini DisplayPort display, use a third-party USB-C to Mini DisplayPort adapter. Check with its manufacturer for compatibility with your Mac and display model.

This is the correct solution for the Apple LED Cinema Display.

DisplayPort

If you're using a DisplayPort cable with your display, use a third-party USB-C to DisplayPort adapter or cable, such as the Moshi USB-C to DisplayPort Cable.

HDMI

If you're using an HDMI cable with your display, use the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter or a third-party USB-C to HDMI adapter or cable.

VGA

If you're using a VGA cable with your display, use the Apple USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter. Or use a third-party USB-C to VGA adapter, such as the Belkin USB-C to VGA Adapter.

DVI

If you're using a DVI cable with your display, use a third-party USB-C to DVI adapter or cable. Check with its manufacturer for compatibility with your Mac and display model.
